FAQs
Can I use existing legacy email templates in the new email builder? No. Templates created in the legacy email builder are not compatible with the new email builder. You can recreate your templates in the new email builder and take advantage of new features such as multi-column layouts, countdown timers, and a stock image library. Legacy templates will continue to work in the legacy builder for campaigns that already use them.
If I share a campaign that uses legacy email templates, will those emails still work? Yes. When you share a campaign that contains emails built in the legacy builder, those emails remain editable in the legacy builder. By default, the legacy builder does not appear in the Control Panel of a campaign sequence, but any legacy email items already on the campaign builder canvas will open in the builder in which they were originally created.
Why does every image upload fail with a "Something went wrong" error? If every image upload attempt in the email builder produces a "Something went wrong" error, check the following causes in order:
- File size too large — the email builder has a maximum image file size of 5MB. Compress the image before uploading using a tool like TinyPNG or your image editor's export settings.
- Unsupported file type — supported formats are JPG, PNG, and GIF only. WebP, HEIC, TIFF, and other formats are not supported and will produce this error.
- Browser extension interference — extensions that block scripts or network requests (such as Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin, or ad blockers) can interrupt the image upload request. Try uploading in an incognito or private browsing window with extensions disabled.
- Image upload service temporarily unavailable — if the file is under 5MB, in JPG or PNG format, and the error persists across multiple browsers with extensions disabled, the image upload service (not the email builder itself) may be experiencing a temporary interruption. The email builder remains fully functional during an image upload service interruption. Wait 10–15 minutes and try uploading the image again.
If the error continues after confirming the file meets all requirements and trying again after 15 minutes, contact support. An agent can check whether there is an active issue with the image upload service for your account.
Can I embed a video directly in the email builder? No. Videos cannot play directly inside an email due to email file size limits and email client security restrictions. To include a video, use the Video content block to insert a YouTube or Vimeo link. The email builder will automatically generate a clickable preview image from the video URL. When a recipient clicks the preview image, the video opens in their browser.
Are YouTube Shorts URLs supported in the new email builder? No. YouTube Shorts URLs (youtube.com/shorts/) are not supported in the Video content block. To use a YouTube Short, convert the Shorts URL to a standard YouTube URL by copying the video ID (the string of characters after /shorts/) and placing it at the end of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=. For example, a Shorts URL ending in /shorts/abc123xyz becomes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abc123xyz. Paste the converted URL into the Video content block.
Can I add custom merge fields in the "To" field in campaigns? Yes. The new email builder supports custom merge fields in the "To" field for campaigns. Only the ~Contact._MyCustomEmail~ syntax is supported. The liquid syntax using brackets [ ] is not supported in the "To" field.
Can I use custom merge fields in the email body? Yes. Custom merge fields are supported in the email body of the new email builder. To add a custom merge field, place your cursor in the text area where you want the field to appear, click the Merge fields drop-down in the formatting toolbar, and select your custom field. For a full list of supported merge fields and syntax, see how to merge custom fields into the email builder.
Where are the global font and style settings? Global font and style settings are located in the Body section of the right-hand navigation panel inside the email builder. Click Body in the right-hand panel to access font type, text color, background color, and other global design options. Changes made in the Body section apply to the entire email template.
Are all fonts supported in all email clients? No. Email clients such as Outlook, Gmail, and Apple Mail do not support all font types. To ensure the font you select displays correctly for all recipients, use one of the following web-safe fonts: Arial, Verdana, Tahoma, Trebuchet MS, Times New Roman, Georgia, Garamond, Courier New, or Brush Script MT. Fonts outside this list may fall back to a default font in email clients that do not support them.
Can I send from a custom email address? Yes. You can send email from any address on a domain you have validated. To validate a domain before sending, see how to validate a custom domain for sending.
Can I tag a contact when they click a link in the email? Yes. You can apply up to 10 tags to a single link. When a contact clicks the link, all applied tags are added to their contact record automatically. To set up link-click tagging, see how to add a tag when a link is clicked.
Can I add a hosted file download to an email? Yes. The new email builder includes a File content block. Drag the File block onto your email template to link to a hosted file. Recipients will see a download link in the email.
Where are campaign merge fields in the campaign builder? Campaign merge fields are located inside the campaign under Actions, then Merge fields. Campaign merge fields are supported for content publishing in the new email builder.
Does the new email builder support A/B testing? No. A/B testing is not available in the new email builder. Usage data showed fewer than 1% of Max Classic users used A/B testing in the legacy builder, so it is not a current priority for the new builder. To share feedback about A/B testing, use the in-app feedback option or contact support.
Is the new email builder available for broadcast emails? Not yet. The new email builder is currently available for campaign sequence emails only. Broadcast email support is planned for a future update. Broadcast emails continue to use the legacy email builder in Marketing > Templates.
